GTA VI vs GTA V: how much bigger is it, really?

"The map is 2.7 times bigger than GTA V's." You have seen that number. It is everywhere. It is also not official, and nobody outside Rockstar knows whether it is right. Here is an honest comparison of GTA V and GTA VI — with a clear line between what has been measured, what has been estimated, and what has simply been invented.

Start with what nobody can argue about: Rockstar has never published an official map size for GTA V, and has not done so for GTA VI either. No square miles, no square kilometres, nothing. Every figure you see comes from fans.

The estimates themselves: the GTA V map is reckoned at roughly 48 square kilometres by the GTAForums coordinate mapping project, which measured distances between known landmarks using in-game coordinates. Red Dead Redemption 2 is estimated at around 75 square kilometres. GTA VI is estimated at roughly 125. That puts the multiplier at about 2.6 — but different groups arrive at 2.55 or 2.7 depending on whether they count water and whether they include unconfirmed northern regions.

Why is it imprecise? Because the method depends on measuring distances between landmarks in trailers that were cut for impact, not for cartography. Camera angle, focal length and editing all distort distance. The mapping projects say this themselves; it is the media coverage that drops the caveat. Be especially wary of headlines claiming the map is "officially" 2.5 times bigger. There is nothing official about it.

What else is bigger: what really changes between 2013 and 2026 is not just surface area. GTA V launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 — machines with 256 megabytes of system memory. The PS5 has 16 gigabytes of GDDR6, sixty times more. Density, on-screen character counts, texture resolution and draw distance all operate on a completely different budget. The footage leaked in August showed crowded beach scenes with strikingly little repetition in character models — exactly what 256 megabytes never allowed.

What history tells us about sales. GTA V had sold 225 million copies as of Take-Two's Q3 FY2026 results in February 2026. The franchise as a whole stands at 465 million and has generated 10.38 billion dollars in revenue since GTA V launched. The game was still shipping around five million copies a quarter in 2025 — thirteen years after release. GTA V is the third best-selling video game of all time.

Opening day: GTA V took 815 million dollars on day one and passed a billion in three days. Development and marketing together were estimated at around 265 million dollars. For comparison, GTA VI's development cost is estimated at one to one and a half billion dollars, and more than two billion with marketing — which would make it the most expensive game ever made. Note that those are industry estimates, not Take-Two figures.

What we do not know. We do not know GTA VI's file size. We do not know its resolution or frame rate on any machine. We do not know whether the map opens fully from the start or unlocks through story progress. We do not know how many counties Leonida has — the five names circulating all trace back to a single source and are unconfirmed.

A comparison that holds up better than square kilometres: GTA V gave you a five-district city and a desert. GTA VI is an entire state with a city, keys, swampland and coast. That is a different kind of structure, not simply a larger version of the same one. Whether it makes for a better game is another question entirely — RDR2 was bigger than GTA V and completely different in pace.

When will we know more? Probably on 27 August. "An Extended Look" is the first official gameplay showing and the likeliest place for Rockstar to show the map itself. Until then: treat 2.5x as a rough indication and never as a fact.
