The GTA VI DualSense: price, pre-orders, and whether it is worth it

Today, Wednesday 10 September, pre-orders open for two limited-edition PlayStation DualSense controllers branded for Grand Theft Auto VI. Here is everything Sony has confirmed, what it costs, how an Icelander actually gets one — and an honest read on whether it is worth it.

What is confirmed, from the PlayStation Blog on 3 September: two versions, black and white, both carrying GTA VI markings. The price is 84.99 euros, 84.99 dollars or 74.99 pounds. Pre-orders open today at 10:00 local time in Europe at direct.playstation.com and selected retailers. The controllers ship on 19 November, the same day as the game.

For comparison, a standard DualSense costs around 74.99 euros in Europe. The special edition is therefore ten euros more than a regular controller, which is modest for a branded edition. Sony's previous limited editions — for God of War Ragnarök and Spider-Man 2, for instance — sat in a similar range and sold out quickly.

What do you get? A controller. That is worth saying plainly: this is a standard DualSense inside, with the same features, the same battery life and the same everything. The difference is the look. There is no extra functionality, no bundled in-game content and no pre-order bonus beyond the controller itself, per Sony's announcement. If you see an advert promising otherwise, it is wrong.

The Icelandic route is more complicated than the European one. PlayStation Direct has not shipped to Iceland, so its pre-order is not open to us. That leaves an Icelandic buyer with three options: wait to see whether ELKO or Tölvutek stock it — neither had listed it at the time of writing — order from a European retailer that ships to Iceland and budget for shipping, VAT and customs on arrival, or skip it. We are watching both retailers and will update this article if the controller appears there.

Let us do the maths in krónur. 84.99 euros is roughly 12,000 krónur at the mid-market rate. That is what a European pays with VAT included. Icelandic retail has so far added around 14 percent to European prices on Sony hardware, which would put the controller somewhere around 13,500 to 14,500 krónur if it reaches shelves here. That is an estimate, not a price.

The controller is, for now, the only official piece of hardware tied to GTA VI. Sony has announced no PS5 console or bundle branded for the game, and the 3 September State of Play contained nothing of the kind. Claims of a "GTA VI edition PS5" circulating on social media are unconfirmed and we label them rumour. If such a bundle comes, it is most likely to be announced closer to launch, as Sony did with Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök.

Is it worth it? This is purely a matter of taste and we will not pretend otherwise. If you need a second controller anyway — and many people do, since DualSense batteries are not famous for their stamina — then ten euros for the GTA VI look is not much. If you already own two and are thinking of this purely as a collector's item, it is worth knowing that Sony's limited editions do not always hold value on the resale market, and that the white one shows dirt.

What we would do: if you are going to buy, do it when it appears at an Icelandic retailer or a European shop that ships here, and do not pay resale prices on eBay or Facebook Marketplace. Sony makes these in considerable quantity. What sells out in hours at pre-order is usually available again before launch day.

And one more thing on priorities. If your GTA VI budget is limited and you are choosing between a controller, an SSD and the game itself: the game first, the drive second, the controller last. We covered storage last week — 200 gigabytes or more is not far-fetched — and that will matter more to you on 19 November than the colour of your controller.
